Niagara Falls Has Its "Rising Star"

From Left to Right: Robyn Flesher 1199 Training Fund, Belinda Matthews, Rising Star recipient, and Joseph Ruffolo, President & of Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital.

Belinda Matthews knows the importance of a good education. That is why, despite working and being a single mom of five, Matthews decided to attend college.

Matthews worked as a housekeeper for Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Upon learning about the 1199SEIU Training Fund, she decided to enroll in the EKG Certification Course at Niagara County Community college. After obtaining her certification, Matthews now has a position as an EKG Tech in the Medical Center.

“I wanted to return to school, but I could never afford it,” Matthews says. “The Training Fund allowed me to get a better job, without losing a major portion of my family income. I’m very grateful for this opportunity.”

Matthews’ hard work has earned her Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital’s “Rising Star” award. The Rising Star recipients are chosen by staff and patients alike for recognition of their outstanding work in and out of the workplace.
