MEMBERS OF NEW JERSEY’S HEALTHCARE UNION VOTE TO MERGE WITH 1199 SEIU, THE LARGEST AND FASTEST GROWING UNION IN THE U.S.

(NEW YORK, NY) With the goal of creating a strong, unified voice for quality patient care and good jobs, the members of SEIU 1199 NJ voted overwhelmingly to merge with 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, the largest healthcare workers union in the country. The New Jersey union, representing 7,000 nursing home and homecare workers, will join the 300,000 healthcare workers in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and the District of Columbia who comprise the membership of 1199 SEIU. The merger will result in increased resources for fighting for healthcare funding and reform in Trenton and uniting non-union healthcare workers in all sectors of the industry throughout New Jersey.

Waterfront Settles Best Nursing Home Contract in Upstate New York!

(Buffalo, New York) May 1, 2008, the contracts of over 3,500 1199SEIU members working at 21 nursing homes at 21 facilities in Western New York expired. 1199 Bargaining Committee members voted unanimously to set four key bargaining goals. These goals included; a fair wage increase, lower cost health insurance, pension improvements, and training and education benefits for all nursing home workers. Since then, workers have been negotiating and winning contracts that reflect the hard work they do everyday.

Syracuse - Members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East overwhelmingly approved a new three-year contract with Crouse Hospital today. “We are especially proud of expanding the sliding scale discount for family health insurance. As healthcare workers, we are extra sensitive to the importance of making health insurance affordable for all workers and their families. Our members were relieved that we protected our insurance benefit and actually improved it for those earning $16.75 per hour or less,” said Nancy Hallock, RN and 1199 Negotiating Committee member.

1199 SEIU CAREGIVERS TRIUMPH IN VICTORY OF PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATE DONNA EDWARDS OVER 16-YEAR INCUMBENT ALBERT WYNN

1199 SEIU members rejoiced and celebrated Donna Edwards’ Primary victory over Rep. Al Wynn in Maryland’s 4th congressional district. With a wide margin of victory of almost 25 percentage points, Edwards is on her way to become the first African-American woman from Maryland to serve in Congress. The union trumpeted the victory as vindication of their criticism of several of Wynn’s controversial votes including his 2002 Iraq War vote, his vote to repeal the estate tax and his support for a bill that made it more difficult for people to file for bankruptcy. 1199’s level of activism in the race and its work with a coalition of labor unions and national progressive organizations were closely watched by political analysts and the media. In a contest where the political stakes were incredibly high, the race attracted national attention as a bellwether fight for the soul of the Democratic Party.

After big union vote, 22,000 Massachusetts home care workers begin first-ever labor contract negotiations

BOSTON, MA - 22,000 Massachusetts residents work as personal care attendants (PCAs), home care workers who help seniors and people with disabilities live in their own homes, instead of institutions. While providing vital health services that allow Massachusetts residents to live at home independently, PCAs receive no health care benefits and have not received a pay increase since 2005. PCAs have no sick days, no vacation days, and no way to take a day off when a family member is ill or dies.
