iSpeak on Katrina

Last week was the one-year anniversary of the Katrina disaster. Today, New Orleans has no functioning homecare agency, only two functioning nursing homes, and only 20 percent of the pre-Katrina hospital beds. Who is responsible for the continuing disaster and what should the government do? If a similar disaster threatened your hometown, how confident are you that the Bush administration has learned from Katrina and would move to prevent it, prepare for it and help in the aftermath?

Ultimately, when the government fails the people, it is the people’s responsibility to provide what is needed for those the government ignores.  It is plainly clear to me and many Americans that the government does not care for the residents of the lower 9th ward and similar communities.  We in the labor movement should be the ones who step up, along with non-profits and charity organizations and use all the tools we picked up from politics and organizing. to get these hospitals and houses for the workers built and running.

We can send resources 24 hours after the 2004 Tsunami, but a year after Katrina our government has still not stepped up and committed resources, expertise, and support necessary to rebuild New Orleans.  Bush and his cronies have no interest in seeing New Orleans rebuilt because it is a majority African-American city and a cultural center that does not support his agenda.
